Mazaher, founded in 1999, performs music that is inspired by the three different styles of devotional music practiced in Upper Egypt, Abu Gheit, and Sudan. The women in the ensemble, often called sheikhas, play a leading role in the ritual-like community healing practice. The ensemble is led by Umm Hassan, Umm Sameh and Nour El Sabah. As part of one of the African-inspired music in Egypt, their performances unfold through rich poly-rhythmic drumming that is distinctly different from other Egyptian music traditions.
This performances is part of Treinnial's music programme curated by Ma3azef.
